The Hime Kaido

After the corona disaster, a new form of tourism is now required. Now that the corona pandemic has ended, a new form of tourism is necessary. While addressing the issues of over-tourism and responding to the desires of travelers who want to interact with local regions while preserving resources, we are proposing sustainable tourism here in Nagano Prefecture.

We are focusing on the area around Nakasendo, commonly known as Hime Kaido. Here, there are many traditional crafts that originated from the handiwork of farmers. Travelers can experience the production process, witness the craftsmanship, and enjoy interacting with residents. We have prepared content that to experience local culture with all five senses.

Ina Area

The Ina region, known as the “country of silkworms and silk”, continues to produce high-quality silk fabric products. Among them is Ina Tsumugi, a traditional craft that has a unique charm with careful handiwork and colors created with natural dyes. Here, we introduce the story of the Kubota Textile Industry, which is currently the only textile manufacturer in the area.

Southern Shinshu Area

Blessed with a great climate and topography, the Minami Shinshu region has produced high-quality Japanese paper products. Iida Washi, which is durable and beautiful, has historically been useful in various situations. Here, we introduce the story of Hisakata Washi and Iida Mizuhiki that come from those traditions.

Kiso Area

The Kiso region produces high-quality timber that is used as sacred trees for Ise Jingu. In this region, which is blessed with abundant forest resources, people have created a way of life that coexists with trees. Here, we introduce the story of the traditional craft of the Oroku comb that has been handed down along with local legends.
