Kiso Lacquer Ware Festival / Narai-Juku Festival
Update:2019/11/07
Narai-juku is a post town on the old Nakasendo road connecting Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo). During the feudal era, one of the highlights was the annual procession of the tea carriers bearing their precious cargo to the Tokugawa shoguns in Edo. Narai-juku’s “Ocha-tsubo Dochu” is a faithful recreation of this procession.
Nearby Hirasawa district’s lacquer ware is a nationally registered traditional craft. The Kiso Lacquer Ware Festival featuring a “Dai-Shikki Ichi” market highlights the creations of these craftsmen. Collectors come from far and wide to buy lacquer ware directly from the makers and to search for one-of-a-kind specialties.
