Ganshoin Temple
Update:2025/04/15
Located approximately 2km from Obuse Station, Ganshoin Temple features a ceiling painting of a phoenix by famed ukiyo-e artist Hokusai made when he was 89 years old. It’s best viewed by laying flat on the tatami mats and looking up. The gardens of the temple are also worth seeing, especially its pond full of frogs. These frogs inspired haiku master Issa to write one of his best known poems.
