Kozenji Temple sits at the base of the central Japanese Alps in Komagane City, not far from the Komagatake Ropeway and Senjojiki Cirque. With a history of over 1,200 years, it is considered the most sacred site in Southern Nagano, and its temple grounds have been designated a national landmark of Japan.

In addition to its many ancient structures, the temple grounds also offer sights in every season, such as weeping cherry blossom trees in spring and magical luminescent moss in summer.

One unique aspect of Kozenji is its connection to the legend of Hayataro, a dog that resided here over 700 years ago. It is said that during Hayataro’s life, the dog exorcised an evil baboon spirit that terrorized a city in Shizuoka. A stone monument at the temple is commemorated to Hayataro, and you can purchase Hayataro-shaped fortunes here as well.
