Climbing Mt. Yakedake

Description
Mt. Yakedake is the only actively volcanic peak of the Northern Japan Alps and has an altitude of 2,444m. The volcanic activity creates a number of hot springs including Kamikochi Onsen and Nakanoyu Onsen. It can be seen from Taisho Pond where it is reflected beautifully in its still waters.
Mt. Yakedake is a popular day hike which can be done from within Kamikochi or from the Nakanoyu area. From the Yakedake trailhead, the climb takes about 5 hours, covering a distance of 6.4km. If travelling by public transportation, factor in the 3km hike from the bus stop which adds another 70 min.

By Train:Get off at Matsumoto Station (JR Shinonoi Line) -> Take the Kamikochi line train to Shinshimashima Station. From there, take the Kamikochi line bus and get off at the Nakanoyu stop. The Shin-Nakanoyu trailhead is a 3km walk (70 min.) |
