From iconic Zenkoji Temple and the adorable Snow Monkeys to relaxing onsens and epic ski resorts, the Northern Nagano Area has it all!
Just beyond the castle town of Matsumoto are natural wonders at the base of the Northern Japanese Alps: the pristine basin of Kamikochi, the pastoral wasabi growing district of Azumino, the Hakuba Valley and the spectacular Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.
Eastern Nagano is a natural oasis easily accessible from Tokyo thanks to the Hokuriku bullet train. Beat the heat at Karuizawa, a luxury resort among highland forests, or enjoy the historical relics of the feudal past in Ueda or Komoro.
Yatsugatake and other mountains rise high around Lake Suwa. From spring to fall the surrounding foothills abound in the colors of wildflower and other foliage. Taking a drive along the Venus Line ridge is but one way to enjoy the area's beauty.
The Kiso Valley
Tucked within the rugged Kiso Valley lie the historic post towns of the Nakasendo and lush natural scenery.
